From last night Written 12 hours ago by Ellen Hawley
Brad is slowly starting to wake up. He has been opening his eyes and as he looks around, I can tell that he is aware of his surroundings. Every time he opens his eyes, I remind him of what happened. He looks back at me with a confused, blank stare. He has been moving his feet around and just squeezed my hand on demand. It has been a long slow day, but Brad did have major brain surgery this morning. The nurse just asked him if he wanted her to turn on the football game. Brad blinked twice for yes. So we are hanging out watching football in the ICU. We had hoped to have a party at our new house to watch the opening game, but plans change. I am just happy to be watching the game with Brad.
He is still intubated, but is not agitated, reaching for the tube, as he was on Tuesday. He really seems very peaceful. Tomorrow could be a really good day.
Thank you again for all of your prayers, calls, texts, and Facebook messages. I have been reading them to Brad. It is very comforting to have such a great army of friends lifting us up. We are so blessed.
Thanks Bills for the reminder! I meant to post something yesterday and forgot...so here it is:
********REMINDER****** Don't forget that starting on Tuesday, September 4 the new morning class times start. The class times are 5:15 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. You must be signed up to attend a class. I know that all regular morning attendees are signed up. If you are an evening person and would like to attend mornings, you must get approval before showing up so that we can ensure that there is space available. Right now, there is only space in the 6:00 a.m. class and it is filling up quickly! Thanks for your patience while we try to find a new location.
By the way Brooke and Cynthia - you two have become lean-mean-crossfittin machines! Excellent times yesterday on a seriously cardio WOD!!
Here is Ellen Hawley's post from this morning:
Brad is doing well this morning. Though well is relative. He is very responsive. He opens his eyes often and we have been communicating through blinking. Everytime he opens his eyes, I re-tell the story if how he got here. I finally asked him if he knew why he was here and he blinked twice for yes. I also asked him if he was okay, and he said no. I guess that is a silly question. He is in the ICU with a tube down his throat, has trouble moving his fingers and toes, has 2 tubes coming out of his head and had a part of his skull removed...twice.
It is not likely that they will remove the breathing tube for another couple of days.
My dad drove me home last night to put the kids to bed. There is a green bow on every mailbox on Victoria Road, in honor of Brad. I cried as we slowly drove past each mailbox...every mailbox. Having all this support, knowing so many people are praying for us, willing and waiting to help us, and ready to have us home gives me strength to make it through another day and night by Brad's side.
I can't thank Rich, Hank, Warren, and Andew enough for being here...day and night. My parents have not left my side and Sharon (Brad's mom) has been amazing with the kids. Webb has no idea what is going on. He is just so excited to have Nana in town....and he gets to play with Rosemary and Mary Katherine (Cabiness) every night. He barely even acknowledges my 30 minutes at home every night, which makes it so much easier to be here at the hospital, where I need to be.
I will continue to post updates, but I don't anticipate any changes today. Brad needs to rest and heal.
