Latest last night from Ellen Hawley on her husband Brad at Trinity. My heart aches for him and his family. I'm thankful they have such a great support system in family and friends.
BiPAP
Written 10 hours ago by Ellen Hawley
Today has been a tough day for Brad. They put him on a BiPAP machine. This is essentially a mask that delivers continuous positive pressure into his lungs. Essentially it is a very powerful oxygen mask. It looks very uncomfortable, but is the step between a standard oxygen mask and the ventilator. He struggled with it for most of the day. As he would get more agitated, his cranial pressure would increase. The nurse and I decided that he was best able to calm down and relax when he was alone, so we all stayed out if his room for the majority if the day. It was hard to be away, knowing he is struggling, but this gave me the opportunity to spend some much needed time with the kids.
They hope to replace the BiPAP with an oxygen mask in the morning. His lungs sound good tonight.
Went with a lower weight today due to recurring back pain after any type of weighted squats. Decided it is probably because of poor form so focused on form and did pretty well - we will see how I feel later this afternoon!
Ellen Hawley's post a.m. today- Ventricular drain is out
Written 5 hours ago by Ellen Hawley
Brad's slept well last night. His cranial pressures have been good so Dr. Nguyen removed the ventricular drain this morning. This is a tube that was monitoring his cranial pressure and draining fluid from his head as necessary. Neurologically Brad is doing very well. His chest x-ray is looking better and we are going to try to get him off of the BiPAP machine today and onto a regular oxygen mask. The goal is to keep him quiet and calm today so he can continue to heal. If he continues to improve, we should be out of the ICU in a few days and onto the main floor.
I know I have said this before, but I have been so impressed with the doctors and nurses here at Trinity. Dr. Nguyen has been extremely patient with me, has been here every day, and gave me his cell phone number if I ever have any concerns. Trinity would not have been my first choice of hospitals for a head trauma, but we came here for the location, and have been very impressed. They actually put me up in the Monclair Medical Inn which is attached to the hospital so I would not have to sleep on the floor any more. I am a 2 minute walk, 1 minute jog from Brad's room, but have a bed and a shower.
I do anticipate a slow, yet steady day today, but will post if something changes.
Thank you again for your concern. I can't wait for Brad to read your posts some day very soon.
